Update from Whitney Christensen, NCPLA President
NCPLA members,
It was wonderful to catch up with so many of you yesterday as the General Assembly provided the first round of relief for our friends and colleagues in western North Carolina. We appreciate everyone who contributed to the lobbyist/legislator donation drive yesterday and would like to extend a special note of gratitude to John Metcalf for spearheading the NCPLA portion of the initiative. Thank you so much John!
I would also like to take a moment to acknowledge the countless NCPLA members who have contributed their time, resources and contacts to facilitate relief efforts, supply deliveries, utility reconnections and more over the last two weeks. After speaking with so many of you yesterday, I was moved by how many lobbyists had used their contacts and expertise to facilitate solutions in the wake of the storm. If nothing else, lobbyists are great connectors and I was so humbled to hear about the many meaningful connections that our community made to help our brothers and sisters in the mountains in their time of need.
As we look ahead to next week, I wanted to gently nudge each of you to register for the Annual Meeting on October 17th if you have not registered already.
We have an exciting program planned, including an all-star cast of Jim Blaine, Morgan Jackson and Ray Martin on our election panel.
We are honored to have Senate Majority Leader Paul Newton, Senate Democratic Whip Jay Chaudhuri, House Conference Chair Matthew Winslow and House Democratic Leader Robert Reives joining our legislator panel and look forward to their insights and predictions for the new biennium, additional Helene relief plans and more.
A special thanks to Kari Barness and Kara Weishaar for assembling such an impressive program. We will also be welcoming new NCPLA Board members, providing updates on 2025 fast passes and discussing the new changes to quarterly zero expense reporting. Attorney members will also receive 2 hours of CLE credit. The menu looks excellent and I know the company will be even better. I look forward to spending time with each of you there!
Warm regards,
Whitney
