Dear NCPLA Members:
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Mike James, who left us peacefully on Friday morning, October 25, 2024, surrounded by his beloved wife, Barbara. Mike faced his battle with cancer with the same strength and grace he demonstrated throughout his life, a testament to his character.
Mike was a remarkable leader and advocate for independent pharmacists, serving as Vice President and Director of Government Affairs for the Association of Community Pharmacies Congressional Network. His dedication to his profession was evident in his role as the owner of Person Street Pharmacy and later PSP Pharmacy. He walked the halls of both the North Carolina General Assembly and Congress, tirelessly championing the rights and needs of pharmacists, ensuring that their voices were heard.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mike was a pillar of his community. As a long-time member and former Chairman of the North Carolina Retail Merchants Association, he embodied the spirit of service. He mentored countless aspiring pharmacy students and young pharmacists, guiding them with kindness and wisdom. His unwavering support and encouragement made a lasting impact on many, shaping the future of pharmacy in our state.
In 2008, Mike was honored with the M. Keith Fearing Award from Campbell University, recognizing his significant contributions to community pharmacy practice. He played an instrumental role in developing a new pharmacy course focused on health care legislation, creating opportunities for students to intern in the offices of U.S. Congressmen, bridging the gap between education and real-world advocacy.
His influence extended beyond the pharmacy community; Mike served on various boards and committees, including the North Carolina Health Coordinating Council and the State Medicaid Committee, demonstrating his commitment to improving healthcare for all. He was a Fellow of the American College of Apothecaries and received accolades such as “National Independent Pharmacist of the Year” and “North Carolina Ambulatory Pharmacist of the Year.”
Mike’s integrity, warmth, and dedication to service were unmatched. He approached everyone with respect and kindness, never uttering a harsh word, even towards those with differing opinions. His legacy is one of compassion and commitment to both his profession and his community.
Mike served five years in the United States Air Force and also had a great love for sports most especially the UNC Tarheels and the New York Yankees.
As we mourn the loss of this incredible man, let us remember the impact he made and the lives he touched. Our thoughts and prayers are with Barbara and Mike’s family during this difficult time. We will share further details as they become available.
Rest in peace, Mike. Your legacy will continue to inspire us all.
